In a fantasy heist gone wrong, a nameless thief uses her powers of illusion to search for clues to her forgotten past. When these clues finally lead to the one person who seems to know her, she find herself wondering if she truly wants the answers she's sought for years.
She finds herself wondering: Is knowing worth the price of being known?
I wrote this short story on a whim after hearing about the open call for Kevin J. Anderson's anthology. From the start, the heroine and her search for meaning in a forgotten life enraptured me. After the anthology was published, I began plotting out a trilogy to see the end of her story, which is how the Forgotten Masquerade Trilogy was born.
Called Nihil by her only friend, she has no name, no memories, and only a torn piece of paper to hint at her past. In order to find who she is, Nihil uses illusion magic to steal information. But, during a heist gone wrong, she meets the one person who could either be her downfall or the key to her past.
When Oliver O'Hanlon, the promising young captain of the emperor's guard, hints that he knows Nihil, she wonders if she can trust him. Suddenly, she's not sure if she's ready to learn who she is, especially when that truth comes with the promise of a civil war.
Tempted by the one thing she's always wanted and a romance she never prepared for, Nihil asks herself one important question: Is knowing worth the price of being known?
